About Us

Founded in 1983 in the village of Gowran, our members come from Kilkenny, Carlow, Tipperary, Dublin and beyond. We train to compete in a wide variety of events including track, field, road running, race walking and cross country. We welcome new members who would like to try athletics.

Our Seniors and Masters squads cover all ages from 19 – 70+, we have regular meet and train groups and we encourage participation in team events.

Our juvenile squads are divided into 2 sections, Gowran AC Academy for ages 6-9, and Gowran AC Juvenile Squad for ages 10 plus.

Gowran AC Academy (ages 6-9)

We offer a games-based approach to training with a view to developing Agility, Balance and Co-ordination, in particular for the younger end of the academy (6-7 year olds) – over the year they will have an opportunity to participate in some competitions but it is not our focus here.

For the 8-9 year olds in the Academy, training is typically a little more competition focused, our coaches look to develop running, throwing and jumping abilities in a fun environment. There are opportunities for all to compete at county and provincial level in throwing, jumping, running and relays – and for those that qualify national competitions – but our focus here is on participation, not performance.

Gowran AC Juvenile Squad (ages 10-17)

Our Juvenile Squad members are aged 10 – 17 and train for and compete across a range of events, during the ages of 10-13 – kids train for all events, we strongly believe that there should not be specialisation until they are 14-16. Our focus with athletes of this age is fitness and technical skills training.

If you are interested in joining or have a child who is interested in trying athletics, contact David Denieffe on 086 8114802 or email info@gowranac.com
